7 Ways To Maintain Healthy and Thriving Trees

You’re a first-time homeowner, and you can’t get over how beautiful your home looks. This is especially true of the home’s curb appeal and oversized lot — there are big trees everywhere and meticulous landscaping around every corner. You have every intention of keeping the property nice, but you also aren’t quite sure where to start. How do you maintain healthy and thriving trees?

This is a question homeowners throughout Lewisville and surrounding communities ask us all the time, and it may surprise you to know it’s not always those who bought their first house. Here are a few tips to help get you started.

Proper Maintenance is Critical To Maintaining Healthy and Thriving Trees

  1. Invest in a professional tree service — I know we’re biased, but hiring a professional tree service eliminates all the guesswork for ensuring your trees are healthy and thriving year-round. Even the healthiest trees require upkeep to stay that way, and a certified arborist will know better than anyone when and where to cut and what makes sense for each tree’s unique needs. Not only will your trees look great, but they’ll also have an easier time warding off diseases and handling Mother Nature gracefully.

  2. Prune during the right times of the year — In Texas, March through May is generally considered the peak growing season. This is when your trees have the best opportunity to leaf out, turn green, and take in as many nutrients as possible before the temperatures shift too dramatically during the summer and again as we approach winter. Some people assume this would be the best time to prune trees, but it’s actually quite the opposite. It’s better to prune during the non-growing seasons (June through February).

  3. Choose the right kind of trees — Not everyone has the opportunity to plant their trees. Sometimes, they’re already there. But if you intend to plant trees, choosing trees that can handle your soil, climate, and landscaping needs is important. You want to ensure your trees always have optimal conditions to grow and thrive.

  4. Water. Lots of water — All trees need water to survive. It’s that simple, and the more you water your trees in North Texas, the better. Younger trees should be watered deeply every few weeks during the first two years to encourage root growth. Older trees don’t need water nearly as much, but you also have to gauge how hot and dry the conditions are outside.

  5. Watch for pests and diseases — Pests and diseases make it incredibly difficult to maintain healthy and thriving trees. While we don’t expect you to be masters at insect and disease prevention, you can play your role by spraying your property for pest control as much as possible. You can also ask your tree service professional what they’re noticing and if they have any advice.

  6. Use more mulch — Many homeowners are unaware of how beneficial mulch can be for trees. Besides creating a more beautiful and manicured look, mulch helps conserve moisture in the soil around the tree and protects tree roots during the winter.

  7. Fertilize your trees — Fertilize your trees at the beginning of spring and ensure they get plenty of water (sprinkler system or during heavy periods of rain) to wash the nutrients through the root system.

How Can Hiring Clean Edge Help?

There’s already so much to love about the trees in your yard. They’re big, beautiful, overflowing with lush green leaves, and anchored by deep roots, a sturdy trunk, and strong limbs. In many ways, they look like what you’d find in a Hollywood movie or front and center on a picturesque magazine cover — where the kids are playing on a tire swing, squirrels are leaping from limb to limb, and mom and dad are having a picnic in the shade. To enjoy moments like that for years to come and ensure you maintain healthy and thriving trees for years to come, you need to take care of them.

For some trees, this could be as simple as trimming a few low-hanging branches once a year. For others that have become too overgrown, it could require more detailed pruning and perhaps removing longer branches that have become a hazard to nearby structures. You could do it yourself, but you may find that it’s too dangerous or a bigger hassle than you thought.
