Fall Tree Damage Check: Signs of Summer Stress in Texas Trees
A long North Texas summer can take a toll on trees—even when they still look healthy from the street. Extreme heat, drought, strong winds, and dry soil can weaken roots, branches, and the canopy, with some of the damage becoming more noticeable once fall arrives.
That makes fall a great time to take a closer look around your property and check for signs of summer stress in your Texas trees.
Look Up: What Is the Canopy Telling You?
Start by stepping back and looking at the entire tree. Pay attention to changes that weren't there earlier in the year.
Watch for:
🍂 Dead or dying branches
🌳 A thinning or uneven canopy
⚠️ Broken or hanging limbs
🍁 Early or excessive leaf drop
☀️ Brown, scorched, or curling leaves

Some leaf loss after a difficult summer can simply be a response to heat and drought. But when thinning foliage is accompanied by deadwood, falling limbs, or other signs of decline, the tree deserves a closer look.
Don't Forget the Trunk and Roots
Problems aren't always in the canopy. Walk around the base of the tree and look for:
🔸 Cracks or splits in the trunk or major limbs
🔸 Peeling or missing bark
🔸 Cavities or areas of visible decay
🔸 Mushrooms or fungal growth around the base
🔸 Damaged or exposed roots
🔸 Insect holes or unusual sawdust around the trunk
Several of these symptoms appearing together can indicate that a tree is under significant stress.

Pay Extra Attention to Trees Near Your Home
Location matters. A declining branch over an unused portion of the yard is very different from one hanging over your roof, driveway, sidewalk, patio, play area, or other frequently used space.
If a tree has begun dropping limbs, has developed a significant crack, or appears to be leaning differently than it did before, don't ignore it.
A tree doesn't necessarily have to be completely dead to become a concern. Trees in serious decline can lose branches or eventually fail as their condition worsens.

What Should You Do This Fall?
Not every stressed tree needs to be removed. Some may benefit from deadwood removal, proper pruning, deep watering, or simply being monitored.
The important thing is knowing the difference between a tree recovering from a difficult Texas summer and one showing signs of more serious decline.
